Unidata Update: July 2018

In case you missed it — here's a recap of news from the Unidata Program Center for the month of July, 2018.

It's Abstract Season for AGU and AMS. The deadline to submit abstracts for most 2018 AGU Fall Meeting sessions is today, August 1, but many sessions at the 2019 AMS Annual Meeting have extended their deadline until next Wednesday, August 8, 2018.

The American Meteorological Society's Board on Environmental Information Processing Technologies (EIPT) wants to let you know that the submission deadline for EIPT papers and posters is 8 August 2018. The conference is soliciting papers and posters a variety of topics.

2018 Users Workshop Explores Evolving Geoscience Workflows

Users Meeting

The 2018 Unidata Users Workshop took place June 25-28 at UCAR's Center Green facility in Boulder, Colorado. The workshop's theme — Reducing Time to Science: Evolving Workflows for Geoscience Research and Education — drew participants from across the atmospheric and other geosciences communities. Attendees took part in a series of presentations and hands-on exercises that explored approaches to data-proximate computing, uses of machine learning techniques in the geosciences, and interaction with data from new satellites and output from ensemble modeling systems.

Summer Intern News

Summer interns Hailey Johnson and Jon Thielen are wrapping up their time at the Unidata Program center this Friday, August 3rd. They'll be summarizing their work for the Unidata staff; we'll make the recording of their presentation available shortly afterwards. Stay tuned!

On the Developer's Blog

Unidata Program Center developers write regularly on technical topics on the Unidata Developer's Blog. This month developer Michael James gives a preview of what's coming up in version 18.1.1 of the Unidata AWIPS package. MetPy Mondays posts continue to appear each week — check out this month's posts for even more on using satellite data with CLASS, some Cartopy projection magic.
