Planned Web Site Downtime April 28, 2012

Planned maintenance to some of UCAR's computer room infrastructure will require Unidata's web site, FTP server, email, and mailing lists to go off-line temporarily on Saturday, April 28th 2012. Maintenance will occur between 6:00am and 3:00pm Mountain Daylight Time. Network downtime for the affected systems is anticipated to be approximately two hours starting at 6:00 am, but since the computer room's uninterruptible power supplies will also be serviced, a power outage any time during the maintenance period could cause additional downtime.

Unidata Program Center staff are working to ensure that other Unidata services provided by hardware on the UCAR network remain on-line during the the outage. We expect that the UPC's Internet Data Distribution nodes, as well as the Motherlode server, will remain functional throughout the upgrade.

Thank you for your patience.

GEMPAK 6.6.0 is now available at the download page https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/downloads/gempak/

In addition to general table and map updates, 6.6.0 includes updates to NEXR2RHI and NMAP2, as well as an improved pre-compilation system architecture determination which eliminates the need to modify configuration files on some systems.  Other updates include improved support for the migration to AWIPS II, and the ability to display Cryosat and high-resolution OSCAT data (thanks to the work done by Greg McFadden at OPC).

Rapid Refresh (RAP) is the next-generation hourly-updated replacement for the Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) numerical model covering North America. The National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), along with the Earth Systems Research Laboratory (ESRL) have been running the RAP model experimentally for some time, and NCEP plans to switch to the RAP for operational use on Tuesday, May 1 2012. (If May 1st is a Critical Weather Day, the transition will take place as soon as practical afterward).
