Kevin Tyle of the University at Albany, State University of New York has been awarded the 2017 Russell L. DeSouza Award by the Unidata Users committee. The DeSouza Award honors “individuals whose energy, expertise, and active involvement enable the Unidata Program to better serve the geosciences.”
Tyle has been active in the Unidata community for many years, serving on the Unidata Users Committee from 2009 through 2015 (as committee chair 2012-2015), and joining the Strategic Advisory Committee in late 2015. He is currently involved in the NSF Big Weather Web project, which aims to make big data infrastructure affordable and adequate for university members of the Numerical Weather Prediction community by combining virtualization, cloud computing and storage, and big data management techniques.

The nominating process is now open for the International Council for Science (ICSU) World Data System (WDS) Data Stewardship Award. The award highlights exceptional contributions to the improvement of scientific data stewardship by early career researchers.
The University of Wisconsin, Madison will be hosting a three-day Unidata Regional Software Training Workshop June 5-7, 2017, with an optional hackathon following on June 8. Unidata software developers will be leading the Python-focused workshop, which will cover the use of the MetPy and Siphon packages in the context of atmospheric science and introduce the National Weather Service's Common AWIPS Visualization Environment (CAVE) along with Python tools for working with AWIPS data services. A basic familiarity with Python is assumed — check out the Unidata Online Python Training for a refresher.
Unidata holds regional workshops in part to facilitate easy access to software training for those who may not be able to travel to training workshops held at the Unidata Program Center in Boulder, Colorado. Attendance is explicitly not limited to University of Wisconsin students and staff; we encourage those within easy travel distance to consider attending.

This year's annual American Meteorological Society meeting, was held January 22-26 in Seattle, Washington. We were happy to see many of the Unidata community members participating in the meeting at our booth in the exhibit hall, and to meet so many prospective community members at the AMS Student Conference.

The Unidata Summer Internship offers undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to work with Unidata software engineers and scientists on projects drawn from a wide variety of areas in the atmospheric and computational sciences. Unidata's mission is to support the Earth Science research and education community with data and tools for data access, analysis, and visualization. As a Unidata intern, you'll pursue the goal of adding innovative enhancements to data access, analysis, and visualization tools developed within Unidata.
The 3rd IEEE International SmartWorld Congress (IEEE SmartWorld 2017) will be held August 4-8, 2017, in San Francisco, California. With the theme “Smart Things Everywhere,” SmartWorld 2017 aims to “provide a high-profile, leading-edge platform for researchers and engineers to exchange and explore state-of-art advances and innovations in graceful integrations of Cyber, Physical, Social, and Thinking Worlds.”
