[IDV #INF-552076]: IDV - cannot read .nc gridded data in IDV

The error message appears to indicate that you are trying to open
the directory instead of one of the files in the directory.  Are you
accessing this through a catalog?   If so, what is the URL for that
catalog. 

If not, then you need to select a particular file under the directory
(e.g. 
http://www.cdc.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/nph-nc/Datasets/ncep.reanalysis2/pressure/air.1979.nc)
for the IDV to load it.
