[gembud] 20180117: 20180112: getting GOES-16 imagery into GEMPAK

Hi Steve,

On 01/17/18 09:41, Steve Decker wrote:
I can confirm that the GOES-16 data being sent as if it were still GOES-13 works without any modifications to my GEMPAK setup.

Excellent, that was my intention.

re:
I would second Victor's nomination of EAST-CONUS, and add the composite feeds NHEM-COMP and SUPER-NATIONAL if possible (not sure how easy it is to stitch together GOES-16 with GOES-15, though).

The Unidata-Wisconsin datastream already has a set of GOES-East/West
composites (one for each GVAR band), but their resolutions are much
less (20 km) than the GINI Super National sector (8 km resolution).
Increasing the size and resolutions of the composites would not be
hard (they could go as high as 4 km which is what the IR channels
on GOES-15 provide). Have you taken a look at these composites?

re:
Not the highest priority given it is January, but the tropics sectors PR-NATIONAL and PR-REGIONAL would be nice as well.

OK. Creation of a Puerto centered sector should not prove to be too
difficult. The question is if users need/want the same resolutions/
coverages as were provided by the GINI Puerto Rico regional and
national sectors. FYI: the NWS is sending the equivalent to the
Puerto Rico regional sector as an SCMI image in NOAAPort. Looks
like they figured that the full disk coverages would provide
all that was needed to replace the Puerto Rico national sector.

re:
I hope to get all of our satellite imagery on our website driven by Python eventually, but the addition of these sectors would be a great interim measure.

I believe that there is work to be done on the Python side to support
imagery in AREA format. This may or may not be important in the
long run.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi all,

It appears someone has figured out G16 and GEMPAK: https://satelliteliaisonblog.com/tag/goes-16/ <https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsatelliteliaisonblog.com%2Ftag%2Fgoes-16%2F&data=02%7C01%7Csgdecker%40envsci.rutgers.edu%7Cceddb273c4bb4e03716508d55b8c00a5%7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe%7C1%7C1%7C636515579265449705&sdata=aZCPZ8UJHh4SzHCvBtwBf6Hlx4%2BXLVabujmsbOLDlEM%3D&reserved=0>

At any rate, I too, would like to see the NIMAGE feed EAST-CONUS with the previous products offerred by G13. All of my GEMPAK satellite scripts are currently broken.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ and WV imagery would be fine as we disseminate a few products to
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ the general public and for internal instructional purposes.

ÂÂÂ This past Monday, January 8, I replaced the GOES-13 image content in
ÂÂÂ Unidata-Wisconsin (IDD feed type UNIWISC aka MCIDAS) GOES-East sectors
with similar bands from GOES-16. In order to provide an impact-free
ÂÂÂ transition, I left the images labeling as being from GOES-13. Since the ÂÂÂ images are being created by McIDAS remapping (IMGREMP) of GOES-16 Full
ÂÂÂ Disk imagery into existing GOES-13 sectors, the navigation for the
ÂÂÂ images is still that for GVAR, not the Fixed Grid projection of GOES-16.
ÂÂÂ GEMPAK, McIDAS, IDV, McIDAS-V and presumably AWIPS users should be
ÂÂÂ able to use these images with no changes to their setup (i.e., no
ÂÂÂ adjustments
ÂÂÂ to GEMPAK tables, etc.).

ÂÂÂ I view the remapping of GOES-16 imagery into GVAR sectors as being a
ÂÂÂ stop gap measure designed to lessen the impact of GOES-13 being
turned off. I want to open a full discussion with LDM/IDD
ÂÂÂ consumers of satellite imagery for what the next steps should be:
ÂÂÂ e.g., send out select bands from the GOES-16 SCMI imagery that
ÂÂÂ is being distributed in NOAAPort; create image sectors that match
ÂÂÂ the spatial extents for the GOES-13 imagery that was sent in NOAAPort
ÂÂÂ in GINI format, etc.

ÂÂÂ Some questions to be answered before we proceed with the creation of
ÂÂÂ new image content using GOES-16 data are:

ÂÂÂ - does GEMPAK support the Fixed Grid projection used in all GOES-16
ÂÂÂÂ Â GRB images?

ÂÂÂÂ Â I _think_ the answer to this is no, Fixed Grid is not supported in
GEMPAK, but I am not sure. If it is not, new image sectors can
ÂÂÂÂ Â be remapped into a projection that GEMPAK supports.

ÂÂÂ - which bands would GEMPAK users like to see in the new content?

ÂÂÂÂ Â Recall that GVAR GOES platforms have 5 imager channels (bands),
ÂÂÂÂ Â while GOES-R has 16 ABI channels.

ÂÂÂ - do GEMPAK users need to be able to extract valid calibrations
ÂÂÂÂ Â from the imagery (e.g., TEMPerature for IR bands and Albedo/
ÂÂÂÂ Â reflectance from VISible bands)?

ÂÂÂÂ Â If yes, this may mean that non-GOES-16 calibration information
ÂÂÂÂ Â will need to be added to the new image sectors.

ÂÂÂ - what LDM/IDD datastream should these image sectors be sent in?

ÂÂÂ Comment(s):

ÂÂÂ - creation of image sectors that are usable by GEMPAK is not
ÂÂÂÂ Â a daunting task ** as long as the output format for the
ÂÂÂÂ Â new sectors is McIDAS AREA **

ÂÂÂÂ Â Creation of new sectors in GINI format would require new program
ÂÂÂÂ Â development while creation in AREA format simply requires the
ÂÂÂÂ Â creation of scripts that run appropriate McIDAS commands.

Your input is important. Please let us know what option would be
ÂÂÂ best for your operations!

ÂÂÂ Cheers,

ÂÂÂ Tom

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Hi Tom!

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ We are very interested in GOES-16 on Gempak. We have been
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ trying to migrate to AWIPS II, but it is not possible yet
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ and we use GOES daily on Gempak for maritime forecasts in
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Brazil. We are worried about the coming end of GOES-13
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ imagery. It is not necessary all the products and channels,
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ but the enough of basic IR, VIS and WV imagery.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â This brings up a good question in my mind: does GEMPAK
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ support the
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â Fixed
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â Grid projection that is used for all products

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â projections supported by GEMPAK, but this would entail
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ some loss of
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â information.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â re:

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â Â Â What is AWS?

Amazon Web Services - Amazon's cloud. All GOES-16 data
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ has been moved
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â up to AWS since the satellite was turned on.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â If anyone is not on the ldm-users email list, please be
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ aware that we
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â are distributing ALL of the GOES-16 imagery and
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ products we are
receiving here in UCAR. The imagery and products are
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ under the DIFAX
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â feed type, but this will be renamed to SATELLITE in an
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ upcoming
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â LDM release (while keeping DIFAX as a secondary name,
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ of course).

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â A much bigger question for the community as a whole is
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ if there is
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â a desire for us (Unidata) to distribute GOES-16 imagery
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ in a format
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â that is readily usable by GEMPAK (e.g., AREA, NOT
 GINI!)? If the
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â answer is yes, what sectors are of interest (NB: not
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ all bands!!).
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â We have been discussing using McIDAS to turn the
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ NOAAPort-delivered
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â SCMI netCDF4 images into McIDAS AREAs and providing
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ them in a
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â satellite image based feed type like UNIWISC, NIMAGE,
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ or possibly
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ Â Â SATELLITE.
