The "config.log" file contained this:

> configure:2755: checking for C compiler default output file name
> configure:2782: /sw/bin/gcc -g -I/usr/local/include -I/usr/local/X11/

> conftest.c  >&5
> gcc: installation problem, cannot exec 'as': No such file or directory

Looks like there's a problem with your C compiler installation.
