The overarching theme of my projects this summer has been improving the accessibility of the Integrated Data Viewer (IDV) for the average scientist. The IDV is a versatile and powerful, though complicated, program.

When I ask people if they’ve heard of the IDV, there are two types of answers that stand out. The first, a simple “no” or “I think someone mentioned it once.” The second, something like “I’ve tried to figure it out, but didn’t get very far.” I worked to reach those who gave the second answer.

Unidata's CloudIDV

Unidata has developed a version of the IDV dubbed “CloudIDV.” CloudIDV is designed for application streaming, allowing an instance of the IDV to be accessed via tablet, mobile phone, or even via a browser. These features are enabled through a fairly new technology called containerization. There are several containerization technologies in use; for CloudIDV we are using Docker.

IPyNB Cookbooks to Create CF-Compliant NetCDF Files

The IDV group recently received a request from a researcher to have the IDV display CF-compliant netCDF trajectory files. The IDV already has some limited capacity to handle these data. However, this particular request requires the IDV handle multiple trajectories in one CF-compliant file, which is currently not supported by the IDV. We would like to assist this researcher with these data.
