AWIPS 23.4.1-1 is a full AWIPS release (not in beta anymore!), with both EDEX and CAVE installation options.

This release (building upon previous 23.4.1 versions) includes a major upgrade for the operating system, running on Rocky 8 Linux – which is a free Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) distribution for EDEX and linux based CAVE.

We are happy to announce a new version of python-awips (v23.1) is available! This version is available via source code (with all example notebooks) or via mamba (conda) and pip. Please see our main documentation page for installation instructions.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break. I have a couple updates that I would like to share with you all regarding:

• Decommissioning Unidata Version 20 (CentOS7) EDEX
• Upcoming Maintenance on Unidata Version 23 EDEX
• AMS Participation

The AWIPS team reminds you that the version 20.3.2 public EDEX Server (edex-cloud.unidata.ucar.edu) will be decommissioned at the end of 2024, as it is running on CentOS7 which has reached its end of life back in June.

We do have a new public EDEX Server version 23.4.1 (edex-beta.unidata.ucar.edu) that has been available since August. Once v20 is decommissioned, the edex-cloud.unidata.ucar.edu will change to point to v23.

This release is still in beta since the National Weather Service is still working on their 23.4.1 release to operations and does not have full functionality. Users will have the option of installing their own EDEX with this version, or continue to connect to Unidata's public EDEX (edex-beta.unidata.ucar.edu).

Today we're going to take a look at some of the most useful shortcuts in CAVE – keyboard hotkeys! Our documentation has an entire page dedicated to defining keyboard shortcuts in CAVE and can be an excellent reference. The keyboard shortcuts on that page are broken down into different times and places where those keys are active while using CAVE. For today's AWIPS Tips though, we'll just focus on some of the D2D Menu Shortcuts.

This notebook demonstrates how to work with radar data by investigating available radar sites and seeing what products are available for a given site. The plots created in this notebook are from NEXRAD 3 algorithm, precipitation, and derived product data, not the base data.
