The "right" unit is the one that one desires in the output netCDF file.
To answer which one is best for your purposes, you have to answer the
question of what you want to use the netCDF file(s) for.

BRIT is a supported calibration type for every image as is RAW
(in case of 1-byte images RAW and BRIT are typically the same).
TEMP is a supported calibration type for Infrared images.

If I were going to use the output netCDF file simply as a display,
I'd use BRIT.  If I want to interrogate the image in an application
like the IDV, I'd use TEMP for Infrared images.
