Oops, sorry about the confusion  It should be the Sample Data Display.  I've
updated the Web page.  Thanks for pointing this out.  Please note that
we haven't updated the tutorial to be in sync with the 1.2b1 release
so some of the widgets from the tutorial may look different in
the 1.2b1 release.  The basic jist should be the same though.
The error you found was wrong for any version though.

It looks like it can't find Java 3D.  Did you install this before
installing the IDV?  If not, see the System Requirements:

for information on downloading and installing Java 3D for the Mac.
