This morning, I am able to replicate your problem on one of the machines
at UW/SSEC that I have login access to: 'notifyme' to the idd.unidata.ucar.edu
cluster directory hang while connections directly to all of the real-server
backend machines succeed indicating a weird problem on the director.

I just tried calling Mike but I got no answer.  I'll send him an email
as soon as I finish this note to see if he can switch the cluster
director role to a different machine.
