These are sample NASA files that have been converted to HDF5. The fit your criteria of real-world and important, although their original format was HDF4.

Bob or Elena, do you know if we have any sample files from the HIRDLS project? If not, we could ask Cheryl for some.

   You can try working with the HDF5 files in the tools/testfiles directory
of our distribution, there's lots of weird files in there.  The only "real-
world" one is the tsaf.h5 file, though.
   Bob and/or Kent can probably point you at lots of real HDF5 files from
NASA though.
