I appreciate you guys bringing these problems to my attention.
I've addressed the 4bit vs. 8bit radar image handling and updated the im
/ imnids library to handle VAD files (imnids routines lacked proper
function prototype declarations).
The updates can be found here (contents listed below):

Instructions:
* save tarball to $NAWIPS
* tar -xvzf gempak_upc6.2.0-upd-201101.tar.gz
* cd $GEMPAK/source/gemlib/im/
* make all
for GPVAD:
* cd $NAWIPS/unidata/programs/gpvad/
* make all;make install
to confirm GPVAD works:
