As part of its data-driven mission, I-GUIDE (the Institute for Geospatial Understanding through an Integrative Discovery Environment), supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation, tackles fundamental scientific and societal challenges focused on sustainability, from climate change and biodiversity loss to food and water insecurity. I-GUIDE Forum 2024, to be held in Jackson, Wyoming October 14-16, 2024, is designed as a conference series to bring together domain science researchers, artificial intelligence (AI) and data scientists, cyberinfrastructure experts, and educators from across academia, government, and industry.

Registration is open for the 2024 Pythia Cook-off! This U.S. National Science Foundation-funded hackathon for Cookbook development will grow participants’ Python coding, communication, collaboration, and educational development skills, while expanding the collection of Pythia Cookbooks for the open source, open science community. Pythia Cookbooks are crowd-sourced collections of domain-specific tutorials and exemplar workflows, building on existing Pythia Foundations tutorials. Cookbooks are supported by a rich GitHub-based infrastructure enabling collaborative authoring and automated health-checking to ensure reproducibility.

The concept of Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDS) asserts that data generated by Indigenous peoples, including data generated from their land and resources, should be governed by the people themselves. Environmental observations collected on native lands are one small part of the IDS context, and they were the subject of a recent workshop hosted by the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The fifth NOAA AI Workshop on Leveraging Artificial Intelligence in Environmental Sciences will be held September 19–21, 2023 as a virtual gathering coordinated by the NOAA Center for Artificial Intelligence.

2023 Users Workshop Attendees

The 2023 Unidata Users Workshop, with the theme Storytelling with Earth Systems Science Data: Challenges and Opportunities for Effective, Ethical, and Reproducible Science , took place June 5-8 Boulder, Colorado and online. The Unidata Users Committee hosted the workshop to advance our collective ability to tell effective and ethical stories using Earth System Science Data. The challenge of storytelling with our data was infused throughout the event; workshop attendees ranging from graduate students to senior scientists explored ways to communicate the meaning of scientific ideas in effective and ethical ways, using a variety of different kinds of data, and taking advantage of new tools like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML).
