Unidata offers equipment grants to support a variety of projects

Just a reminder that the 2016 Unidata Community Equipment Awards solicitation is open for new proposals through March 25, 2016. If you're looking for equipment (physical hardware or cloud-based services) to get your Unidata technology project off the ground, we encourage you to submit a proposal.

Created under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, Unidata equipment awards are intended to encourage new members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the geosciences to join the Unidata community, and to encourage existing members to continue their active participation, enhancing the community process. For 2016, a total of $100,000 is available for awards; proposals for amounts up to $20,000 will be considered.

The Unidata Community Survey seeks your feedback both on existing Unidata services and possible future directions for the program. The Atmospheric Science Group in the Department of Geosciences at Texas Tech University seeks applications for a full time, non-tenure-track Research Assistant Professor. Evaluation of candidates will begin January 18, 2015 and continue until the position is filled. A start date as soon as January 2016 is possible. A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment.

The Atmospheric Science Group in the Department of Geosciences at Texas Tech University seeks applications for a full time, non-tenure-track Research Assistant Professor within the Mesoscale Modeling research group. The successful applicant will broadly work in the areas of probabilistic numerical weather prediction and ensemble data assimilation, with a focus on transitioning state-of-the-art forecasting products into the operational Texas Tech Ensemble Prediction System (TTEPS). Evaluation of candidates will begin February 1, 2016 and will continue until the position is filled. A start date as soon as February 2016 is possible. A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment.

The NOAA National Ocean Service (NOS) Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) is looking to hire a coastal ocean modeler to join its Modeling Team. This team is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the NOS Operational Forecast Systems (OFS) comprising the National Operational Coastal Modeling Program (NOCMP) as well as the implementation of new or upgraded OFS into operations within NWS/NCEP's supercomputing environment.

Created under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, Unidata equipment awards are intended to encourage new members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the geosciences to join the Unidata community, and to encourage existing members to continue their active participation, enhancing the community process. Indiana University will be demonstrating the IDV running in the cloud at the Supercomputing 2015 conference being held November 15-19, 2015 in Austin TX.

If you're attending the conference, stop by booth 532 to see a range of exhibits from the Pervasive Technology Institute, the Global Research Network Operations Center, and the IU School of Informatics and Computing.

The Department of Meteorology and Climate Science at San José State University (SJSU) is seeking applicants for the post of Assistant Professor with a specialization in Western US weather as it relates to precipitation events, together with impacts of climate change. Applicants must have completed a PhD in Atmospheric Science or a closely-related field by the start of the appointment. Applicants should have awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Note: The submission deadline for the Raskin Scholarship has been extended to October 15, 2015.

The Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) is an open networked community that brings together science, data and information technology practitioners around Earth science issues.

The Raskin Scholarship is open to a current graduate student in good standing at an institution affiliated with the ESIP Federation. To be considered for the scholarship, students must be studying an Earth science, computer science or closely related discipline and have an interest in fields related to current technical, scientific or applied activities of the ESIP Federation. The Scholarship will provide a $2000 stipend and travel support to the ESIP Federation bi-annual meetings. The Raskin Scholar will have an invited talk covering their field of interest at the ESIP Summer Meeting.
