As a result of changes in the spring 2024 meeting schedule for the NSF Unidata Users Committee, we are able to extend the submission deadline for this year's Community Equipment Awards solicitation until March 29, 2024. All other aspects of the 2024 program remain as described in the original announcement.

Do you know someone in the Unidata community who has been actively involved and helpful to you and other Unidata members? Perhaps this is someone who volunteers to assist others, contributes software, or makes suggestions that are generally useful for the community.

The Unidata Users Committee invites you to submit nominations for the Russell L. DeSouza Award for Outstanding Community Service. This Community Service Award honors individuals whose energy, expertise, and active involvement enable the Unidata Program to better serve the geosciences. Honorees personify Unidata's ideal of a community that shares ideas, data, and software through computing and networking technologies.

NSF Unidata offers JupyterHub resources tailored to the instructional requirements of university atmospheric science classes through the Science Gateway project. For the Spring 2024 term, NSF Unidata is once again offering universities (or individual instructors) access to cloud-based JupyterHub servers tailored to their requirements.

Unidata offers computer equipment grants to support a variety of projects

The Unidata Program Center is pleased to announce the opening of the 2024 Unidata Community Equipment Awards solicitation. Created under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, Unidata equipment awards are intended to encourage new members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the Earth Systems Sciences to join the Unidata community, and to encourage existing members to continue their active participation, enhancing the community process. For 2024, a total of $100,000 is available for awards; proposals for amounts up to $20,000 will be considered.

Announcing two new microlearning resources available now on Unidata eLearning. Microlearning is a modular approach to online learning that focuses on a single objective. These resources can be appended to existing activities for just-in-time foundational scaffolding in a quick five to ten minutes. The duo of modules releasing today focus on foundational data literacy within the Earth Systems Sciences.

Jeremy Fischer and Andrea Zonca

Andrea Zonca from the San Diego Supercomputing Center and Jeremy Fischer from Indiana University have been awarded the 2023 Russell L. DeSouza Award by the Unidata Users committee. The DeSouza Award honors “substantive and sustained contributions of energy and expertise to the geosciences community that reflect the ideals of the Unidata Program's mission” to better serve the geosciences.
