[IDV #DJL-161398]: realtime data for use in IDV

Dr. Schwartz,

I think the problem is the video card driver in your computer needs to be
updated. You don't need to update Java, the IDV comes with its own JVE.

> First, you don't need to worry about the data source. The IDV is configured
> to connect with several data servers. Once your computer are connected to the
> internet, you have access to a lot of near real time data (model, radar, obs,
> satellite).
>
> In the Dashboard window, select Data Choosers > Catalogs > Unidata Model
> Data > Forecast Model Data > GFS > GFS One Degree > GFS One Degree Forecast >
> Latest Collection for GFS One Degree
>
> then, click Add Source
>
> In the Dashboard Field Selector, select 3D grid > Mass > Geophential height,
> in the upper right panel, select 3D Surface > Color-Filled Contoured
> Parameter as Topography,
> in the lower right panel, select time and level (50000 Pa), and maybe subset
> region, the click Create Display
>
> You will get the 3-D representations of the 500 mb surface.
>
> After create the display, you can go to Dashboard > Displays to adjust the
> display setting.
>
> Once you finish, go to File > Save as, input a bundle name.
> Next time, you only need to do File > Open and input the bundle name, you can
> get the same display but at the real time. You can also share the bundle with

>
> Once you are getting more familar with the IDV, you can also play with those

> If it is possible, we can help setup a mini workshop to train you and student.
