Hmmm, that's wierd. For the bzipped files, the IDV uncompresses them
to your local .metapps/DefaultIdv/tmp directory. The next time
you try to load that file, it will use the decompressed file if
it finds one, so that would explain why it works the second time.

I tried the 20041128014510 files and both (bzipped and uncompressed)
worked fine from my local disk. Could you try from your local disk?

Thanks. Here's what I would like you to try:

1) Try loading from local disk and see if it's NFS related.

2) If NFS related, try the following:

- download idv.jar from ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/idv/untested
and replace the one you have.
- download defaultmenu.xml from the same place and put it in your
  <home>/.metapps/DefaultIdv directory.

3) Start the IDV from a terminal window. You should now have a
Test menu on the menu bar. From the Test menu, select the "Start debug"
item. You should see:

****** START DEBUG ******

in the terminal window.

4) Open a bzipped file from the NFS drive (one that you haven't done
before). You should see a lot of output in the terminal. Send
me that output.

5) Exit the IDV. You can remove the defaultmenu.xml (or rename it)
if you don't want the Test menu any more.
