FYI - I will be participating in a METAR/TAF workshop at the annual
National Weather Association meeting in Houston in December. The
workshop will be given twice - the tentative dates are for one
presentation on Tues. 12/5 from 3-5 PM and repeated (same
presentation) on Wed. 12/6 from 3-5 PM. There will be 5 papers in the
workshop, as follows (not necessarily in this order):

Overview of METAR/TAF Implementation and details of the new METAR code
(including comparison to SAO), given by Howard Diamond, NWS Office of
    Systems Operations.

Overview of TAF Implementation and details of the new TAF code
(including comparison to FT), given by Chris Alex, NWS Office of
    Meteorology.

Overview of the ASOS METAR Present Weather Algorithm, given by Joe
Fiore of Hughes STX Corporation and Doug Gifford, NWS Surface
    Observation Modernization Office.

Overview of the ASOS METAR Sky and Visibility Algorithms, given by Doug
Giffors, NWS Surface Observation Modernization Office and Joe Fiore,
    Hughes STX Corporation.

The Effect of METAR and TAF on Pilots and the FAA, given by Terry
Lankford, Flight Service Specialist, Oakland, CA FSS.

You might pass this info along to folks who will be going to the NWA
    conference.
