Re: [ldm-users] No European model data as of 12/1?

All,

Quick update on this. I ran into Becky Cosgrove at AMS this week, and she said
that the 0.5 deg replacement ECMWF data will NOT be going out over NOAAPORT,
primarily because of bandwidth constraints.

However, I asked what about putting the merger of WMO Essential and WMO
Additional products (basically same fields/levels we used to get) out on the
CONDUIT data stream, and she was willing to look into that. Sounded like it
could happen.

As of about 5 minutes ago, I have an email in to her reminding her of our
conversation. I'll keep you posted if I hear anything more.

Pete,

Yes, we are a member of the WMO. However, we aren’t members of ECMWF.

The real issue is this: NOAAport had several ECMWF products that are
“additional” by the NWS at 2.5 degree resolution, that have now been
discontinued as of December 1. These were the products that were beyond WMO
Resolution 40. The NWS can get at these parameters; it’s a matter of if the NWS
wants to send it out at the .5 degree resolution.

Either way: I do hope we see these data again on NOAAport at 0.5 degrees
resolution. Whatever you think of the ECWMF model versus any other, it’s darn
good, and I will miss it being on there.

The other levels (700, 200, etc.) are "available to WMO members" with some
restrictions, no commercial use, etc.. but to get a password for their ftp
server, one needs to "contact our Permanent WMO rep and ask them to send an
email to the ECMWF director."

That sounds like above my pay grade, and probably what NWS (or Unidata) should
be investigating if we want to see this data on NOAAPORT or CONDUIT(I do!)

<Stupid question> The US is still a WMO member, correct? </Stupid question>

As you mentioned, quite a few standard parameters missing, 700, 200 level, RH,
etc.

I sure hope NWS can restore at least what was on the SBN.

So, looking at that public ftp directory, it looks like they are no longer
distributing any 700 hPa or 200 hPa products. There appears to be only MSLP,
500 hPa Heights, and 850 hPa Temp, U, V, along with some hurricane track
products and some other things (es_msl, and em_msl, and em_ws for example) that
I'm not sure what they are yet.

The 0.5 deg is nice, the lack of anything above 500 hPa is a bummer.

Lovely. Thanks, Brian. Anyone: did I miss a Service Change Notice?
