Donna,
DBFILE is to be used with GDBM databases. This does not include MySQL. DBM
is basically a flat-file database that can be accessed via Unix methods.
GDBM is GNU's implementation of it.

We use PIPE/EXEC against Perl/PHP scripts for any MySQL/PostgreSQL
transactions. This allows for the data to be manipulated before it is
inserted.
Someone may be able to elaborate further on my findings.
