I may be spamming again..but we get GFS stratospheric data (7,5,3,2mb data) 
from the Climate Prediction Center.  I received this notice from them on 26 
Sept.  This may explain some things:

"...We provided you with 0.5x0.5 gridded fields from the GFS.  Operations,
today, changed this grid format to the native gaussian grid which is
1152x576..."
