Kevin,
I don't think this issue is particular to the global 0.5 degree grids.
I compared the 500mb plot that you showed with the GRID 212 (40km)
CONUS data from NOAAPORT as well, and that data looks to have the same
noisy
features. Both are GRIB2, and somewhat comparable grid spacing, so the
display appears consistently unattractive in that regard.
