So many things to do, so little time. ;-) Given the departure of the two
main developers of the IDV last spring, and the time it will take for
the new developer to come up to speed (doing the work of 2 people), I
suspect it will take longer for things on the TODO list to get implemented.
I can understand the reasoning that if it works in the CDM, it should
work in the IDV, but that is not always the case. The CDM point data
import has several different FeatureTypes (station obs, trajectories,
profiles, etc) and not all have been implemented in the IDV although
they are all on the TODO list.
That said, the reason that Reinoud's file did not work in the IDV is a
bug that will be fixed in the next nightly build. You need to set the
Data Source Type to netCDF/GEMPAK Point Files to read it in (these go
through the CDM stack).
As always, if you have concerns or input about the direction of the IDV
development, please bring them to the Unidata User's Committee and/or
the Unidata Policy Committee. They are meeting this week in Boulder.

2-3 years I have repeatedly reminded the IDV developers to integrate a
BUFR reader, telling them that without BUFR IDV is quite incomplete. I
have always been told that it is in the pipeline.
