It should just-work(tm). Did you rename the files to properly match the directory structure and file naming that GEMPAK expects? 

For example:

$ ls $RAD/NIDS/DMX/N0R/N0R_20150428_2028
/data/gempak/nexrad/NIDS/DMX/N0R/N0R_20150428_2028
