Actually I do think it could be the perl version, I mentioned that last
week.  Ask Doug to install the (5.005) version. There could be a problem
with the eof() function in version 5.8.0.  Just yesterday I found a bug
in perl.  Keep me informed when the other version of perl is installed.

BTW, Doug Smith got the vanilla RH9 machine up and running this morning and
I've got the LDM/Decoder combination set up on it as it had been on the
cluster configuration.  Once again metar2nc is being spawned in huge
numbers.  I was working with Tom on it and we went so far as to grab the
shemp version of metar2nc to see if the problem persist and it did.

Speculation: do you think it might have something to do with the version of
perl on our machine (5.8.0) vs. the one on shemp (5.005)?
