Bringing Back the NIU Weather Server

Northern Illinois University

In the spring of 2019, Northern Illinois University (NIU) applied for and received a Unidata Community Equipment Award grant for a project titled “Bringing back weather.niu.edu: A multifaced server at Northern Illinois University.” The NIU Meteorology department (now Geographic and Atmospheric Sciences) has been involved in the dissemination of meteorological data since the late 1990s, when Russell L. DeSouza Award winner Mr. Gilbert Sebenste set up the “NIU Weather” server at weather.niu.edu. The server relayed data to dozens of Universities via the LDM and had a popular “storm machine” website that provided some of the earliest model forecast soundings. After Mr. Sebenste's departure from NIU in 2017, the server was taken off-line.

The Unidata Program Center is hiring! We are looking for a scientific software developer to join our team in creating and maintaining software and data services to support the geosciences.

We are looking for a software developer to help us help our community of scientists bridge the gaps between data servers, desktop scientific visualization packages like the Integrated Data Viewer, and “notebook”-style workflows (think Jupyter notebooks). We'll be integrating existing tools with new technologies to help scientists streamline the process of finding and analyzing data. At the Unidata Program Center, you'll have a chance to work with a great team in-house and an enthusiastic open source community.

As part of an ongoing effort at the Unidata Program Center to bring Python-based workflows to the atmospheric science community, UPC developers have created the Unidata Jupyter Notebook Gallery to showcase tools and techniques that may be of interest to community members. The gallery is a collection of Jupyter notebooks that demonstrate ways to work with atmospheric science data using Python. The notebooks use a variety of tools available in the Python ecosystem, including several developed by Unidata.
