Unidata Program Center Welcomes Shay Carter

Shay Carter
Shay Carter

Shay Carter joined the Unidata team on September 3rd, 2019 as a Software Engineer and Programmer. Originally from Canada, she moved from Phoenix, Arizona to take over this new position.

Shay earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Arizona State University (ASU). Her undergraduate studies consisted of a major in Earth and Space Exploration, with a minor in Computational Mathematical Sciences. She also graduated from Barrett, the Honors College at ASU. She went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, where she studied stem cells and developed her own genetic quantification algorithm and program in Java. She has spent the last 9 years working at the Mars Space Flight Facility at ASU, and has primarily been a Software Developer on the JMARS GIS program.

Here at Unidata, she will assist with the development of the AWIPS package. “I believe my Java experience will be very valuable and applicable for supporting and developing CAVE,” she says. Shay will be contributing to both the AWIPS Environmental Data EXchange (EDEX) server and to the Common AWIPS Visualization Environment (CAVE) graphical user interface.

Outside of work, Shay enjoys being active, and that is one of the many reasons she was excited to move to Colorado. She has played competitive ultimate Frisbee for the last several years, and was also a competitive wakeboarder for many years. She loves to go snowboarding, hiking, and exploring — pretty much anything outdoors interests her. She also is an avid ASU sports fan (especially football), and loves to follow LeBron in the NBA. She is interested in just about all sports (playing or watching) and won’t pass up a conversation about them.

Please help us welcome Shay to the Unidata Program Center Team!

Comments:

Unidata has hired a gem in Shay. You can allow for my bias but my experience over the years is that she will be a winner in all that she does.
