Re: [noaaport] Changes to GOES East/West data coming over NOAAPort

As many of you have already seen, these changes were delayed from their original timelines but took effect for GOES-16 yesterday at 18Z.

A new SCN just came out with additional details of this transition for both GOES-East and GOES-West:  https://www.weather.gov/media/notification/pdf2/scn22-94_geo_spectral_coverage_goes-eastwest_aaa.pdf

A few important notes about these changes:
  1. GOES-West implementation is scheduled for January 4th (no time listed)
  2. These changes for both GOES-East AND GOES-West will temporarily be rolled back between Jan. 31 and Mar. 6
  3. On or about March 6th, these changes will be "reinstated permanently."

The justification for these changes remains the same, essentially that removal of these products will reduce the bandwidth used on NOAAPort/SBN.  However, for those needing Southern Hemispheric GOES imagery there are a few options:
  1. ADDE feeds:  Unidata makes available the full resolution Full-Disk imagery over the ADDE feeds EAST/EASTALL and WEST/WESTALL.

  2. IDD feeds:  
    • Unidata also makes available the full resolution Full-Disk imagery on the SATELLITE (formerly DIFAX) IDD feed.  Details, including example pattern-actions, can be found here: https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/data/goesr.html
    • Additional Full-Disk imagery is available on the UNIWISC feed.  The difference here is bands 2, 8 and 13 (and only those bands) have been rescaled to 4km; finer than SBN's 6km resolution but coarser than full resolution (500m, 2km and 2km respectively).  This may be a good compromise for those seeking S.Hemi data while needing to conserve bandwidth.  Details on the UNIWISC feed can be found here:  https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/data/uniwisc.html

  1. Cease transmission of all reduced-resolution southern hemisphere imagery, for all bands (1-16)
  2. Cease creation and transmission of the GOES-West Hawaii Regional sector, for all bands (1-16)
  3. Increase the spatial resolution of SCMI Band 13 (IR Window) to full (2 km) resolution (for northern hemisphere)
  4. Begin transmission of SCMI (Band 13 only) for a new GOES-West regional sector (American Samoa)
  5. Cease transmission of SCMI Bands 11, 12, 14, and 16 for the GOES-East Puerto Rico sector

Most of these are either removals or changes to existing products.  However there is one addition, the American Samoa sector (#4).  Band 13 for that domain will arrive under the following [new] header:

TIRZ13 KNES

Depending on your configuration, you may want to check your PQACT files to ensure the new RZ domain will be accepted.
