In general, you should use the same compiler that are generaly used to
compile other software.  If most of your software is compiled using gcc
and g77, then you should use the same compilers for the netCDF package.

You will still be able to use the Fortran-77 interface.  Many, many
programs do.  You will not be able to use the Fortran-90 interface until
you obtain a Fortran-90 compiler.  Because you don't have any Fortran-90
programs, this won't be a problem.

One can do everything with the Fortran-77 interface that one can do with
the Fortran-90 interface.  It's just *slightly* easier with Fortran-90.
