Don't worry about not being a C specialist. I am.

Forgive me. I should have made it clear that the *.m4 files are in the
`fortran/' subdirectory in the netCDF source hierarchy -- unless you are
building version 3 of the netCDF package, in which case there are no
*.m4 files at all.

So, a question I should have asked in my reply is this: are you building
version 2 or version 3 of the netCDF package (i.e. is the package name
`netcdf-2.4.3' or `netcdf-3.xa')?
