I didn't use a script.  I just copied your `netcdf.f' program to my
current working directory; edited it as I described; and built it
against my netCDF 2.4.3 library.  I then copied your netCDF file (z500)
to the current working directory and ran the `netcdf' program.  The
output was as you saw.
