It appears that you don't have a C compiler (or at least one that works)!
I conclude this from the following lines in the file `config.log':

    configure:1684: cc -c -O -Kpic  conftest.c 1>&5
    /usr/ucb/cc:  language optional software package not installed

Given your PATH above, I'm puzzled as to why the /usr/ucb/cc compiler
was chosen.  Our SunOS 5.3 system has a C compiler in /opt/SUNWspro/bin.
Does yours?  Can you invoke it?  Does it successfully compile a test
file?
