19990423: NMAP?

Bob,

NCEP still has not made a release to us since NAWIPS-5.4.
While they continue to make internal releases to satisfy
needs to support the national centers, they have not been able
to fix a rease due to the internal pressures of AWIPS
being targeted for a summer acceptance.

Core library changes in the gemlib have been made to support
NMAP at NCEP since our v5.4 release, so the source of NMAP is 
not compatible with our current release. Rumors
continue for a summer release since NCEP may no longer support
any Gempak development after AWIPS is officially deployed- though
there will be some needs of the national centers that AWIPS cannot
meet- so some NMAP development will probably continue- though not
called NAWIPS.

Mary desJardins at NCEP is responsible for all of the NAWIPS development,
and I have talked with her recently regarding Unidata receiving 
what they have developed, but the pressure in DC has not been
favorable to release anything outside without documentation
and while still under development. Hopefully we will be able to
work to obtain a new release - but I have no solid time frame at this
time.

I share your desire to get NMAP out to our community and think it
will provide auseful complement to tools which are already available.
