Storing Polygon Information

Can anyone recommend a convention or method of storing polygonal information in a NetCDF file? The polygons may not have an equal number of points. They could be triangles, rectangles, octagons, whatever. I just can't think of any efficient means of storing this kind of information. Any ideas or opinions?

Thanks!
Matthew Hanna
