On March 25, the High Plains Regional Climate Center (HPRCC) hosted a workshop on accessing climate data using THREDDS Data Servers. Ten faculty, staff, and students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln were in attendance and represented a wide variety of disciplines, including agriculture, climatology, and ecology. The workshop provided an opportunity for the participants to interact with data on a THREDDS Data Server and learn about netCDF data. For many, this was a brand new experience.

Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana will be hosting a Unidata Regional Software Training Workshop August 12-13, 2019. Unidata software developers will be leading the two-day Python-focused workshop, which will cover the use of the MetPy and Siphon packages in the context of atmospheric science.

A workshop at Valparaiso originally scheduled for March, 2019 was cancelled when a severe winter storm prevented Unidata instructors from traveling to Indiana. The August workshop will have the same agenda as was planned for March.

The State University of New York at Albany in Albany, New York will be hosting a Unidata Regional Software Training Workshop May 29-30, 2019. Unidata software developers will be leading the two-day Python-focused workshop, which will cover the use of the MetPy and Siphon packages in the context of atmospheric science. A basic familiarity with Python is assumed.

Unidata holds regional workshops in part to facilitate easy access to software training for those who may not be able to travel to training workshops held at the Unidata Program Center in Boulder, Colorado. Attendance is explicitly not limited to University at Albany students and staff; we encourage those within easy travel distance to consider attending.

Unidata Users and Strategic Advisory Committees

Unidata is governed by its community. Our governing committees facilitate consensus-building for future directions of the Unidata Program and establish standards of involvement for the community. Direct involvement in the Program by the academic community helps Unidata stay on top of trends in education and research; for example, recent initiatives on Python and cloud-based computing have benefitted tremendously from committee advice and involvement.

The Unidata Program Center is seeking new people to serve on Unidata's Strategic Advisory and Users Committees. This is your chance to make a difference on behalf of the Unidata community. As Sepideh Yalda, the current Chair of the Unidata Strategic Advisory Committee notes, “Unidata has and continues to serve a critical role in providing data and services to the earth and related sciences community. The opportunity to serve as a member on Unidata governance committees provides you with the ability to contribute and help guide the future developments in data sharing and the associated services in support of research and education in atmospheric sciences.”

The Unidata Users Committee is seeking nominations for a Graduate Student representative to join the group of nine university faculty members currently serving on this committee. Nominees should be Graduate Students who use Unidata software, hold a strong interest in the Unidata program, and have an interest in learning how a community-based program like Unidata is governed. Nominations may be made by any community member, and self-nominations are acceptable. This position will be for a two-year term beginning with the fall 2019 Users Committee meeting.

The Unidata Program Center is pleased to announce the availability of a JupyterHub server tailored to the needs of the atmospheric science community. Using resources provided by the National Science Foundation's Jetstream cloud-computing platform, Unidata's JupyterHub server is intended to serve as a demonstration of a notebook-based workflow for geoscience activities. After preliminary testing in a variety of situations including workshop and classroom use, Unidata staff are looking to expand beta-testing of the server to the wider community.

Metro State University in Denver, Colorado will be hosting a Unidata Regional Software Training Workshop March 8, 2019. Unidata software developers will be leading the one-day Python-focused workshop, which will cover the use of the MetPy and Siphon packages in the context of atmospheric science. Love Data Week (LDW) event is to raise awareness and build a community to engage on topics related to research data management, sharing, preservation, reuse, and library-based research data services. Participants will share practical tips, resources, and stories to help researchers at any stage in their career use good data practices. Love Data Week 2019 is scheduled for February 11-15, 2019. (Generally, it takes place the week of Valentine's Day.)
