Version 1.4.1 of MetPy, a collection of tools in Python for reading, visualizing, and performing calculations with weather data, has been released. The project aims to mesh well with the rest of the scientific Python ecosystem, including the Numpy, Scipy, and Matplotlib projects, adding functionality specific to meteorology. This is a bug fix release for MetPy v1.4.0.
Registration for the 2023 Unidata Users Workshop is now open.
The Unidata Users Committee invites you to join Unidata staff, community members, and distinguished speakers this June in Boulder, Colorado. The goal of this year's workshop is to raise awareness about how to access and use Earth Systems Science data, and to explore approaches to tell the stories of our science in a way that is reproducible, responsible, and robust. Scientists and educators from the Earth Systems Science community will present ideas and techniques for making effective use of geoscience data and share activities, course materials, and ideas for improving education and research.
Today we're going to talk a little bit about python-awips! However, unlike our previous python-awips blogs, where we talk about one of our example notebooks, today we're going to walk you through how to actually open up Jupyter and run those notebooks!
The NSF Institute for Geospatial Understanding through an Integrative Discovery Environment (I-GUIDE) enables transformative discovery and innovation for tackling fundamental scientific and societal challenges that are at the cusp of achieving significant breakthroughs by harnessing the vast, diverse, and ever-growing corpus of geospatial data. The week of August 7-11 2023, I-GUIDE will lead a Summer School on Convergence Science in Action in Boulder, CO.
The department of Geography & Meteorology at Valparaiso University used a 2021 Unidata Equipment Award grant to set up a departmental JupyterHub server, transforming the accessibility of their computing resources for students and greatly benefiting the overall academic experience within their meteorology program.
Read on for Prof. Kevin Goebbert's description of the project.
As a reminder, there's still time to nominate someone for the 2023 Russell L. DeSouza award! Nominations are due by March 15th.
The Unidata Users Committee invites you to submit nominations for the Russell L. DeSouza Award for Outstanding Community Service. This Community Service Award honors individuals whose energy, expertise, and active involvement enable the Unidata Program to better serve the geosciences. Honorees personify Unidata's ideal of a community that shares ideas, data, and software through computing and networking technologies.
The Unidata Program Center is partnering with UCAR's COSMIC program to provide radio occultation data provided by Spire Global. The products described below are now available via the Internet Data Distribution (IDD) network. Data are on the EXP feed with a typical total volume of 80-110 MB per hour.
In this blog we are going to show you how to create a new projection and add it to the drop down scales menu in CAVE. For this scenario, we are assuming you have access to both CAVE and EDEX servers (ex. running your own EDEX).
This year's annual American Meteorological Society meeting was held 8-12 January 2023 in Denver, Colorado. In addition to the conference being a hybrid event with thousands physically in attendance (which felt a bit odd, after the last few years), the location being so close to the Unidata Program Center in Boulder meant more than the usual number of staff members were able to attend as presenters of talks and posters, conveners of sessions, and facilitators of workshops and short courses for students, educators, and researchers. Staff members also spent time meeting community members in the new exhibit hall booth bringing together a variety of UCAR and NCAR programs in one space. As always, we were also glad to meet so many prospective community members at the AMS Student Conference.
With so much going on at the conference, we can't cover everything here. Instead, we present some highlights from the week's events.
