Thank you Doug,

Sometimes creating a new NetBeans project from existing sources is not
as straightforward. Plus I don't have much experience in working with
such a large program.

I have VisAD working in Eclipse. I put the code under a single "src" 
directory and excluded "visad/examples" from the build path (and added
it as a separate source folder) and it was ready to go. I'm not sure
what issues you'll run into with Netbeans.
