Hi- There is a new version of Unidata's MetApps software available at: http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/projects/metapps/SoftwareDownload.html Current development is focused on the Integrated Data Viewer (IDV) which can be used to display georeferenced numercial model output, satellite and radar imagery. The IDV uses VisAD for the underlying data model and rendering capabilities. This is prototype software and as such is unsupported, but does show some of the things you can do using VisAD.
