Unidata has developed a Shapefile adapter that will create a UnionSet of Gridded2DSets from a .shp file of maplines. It is available as ucar.visad.ShapefileAdapter in metapps.jar. We hope to develop a more rigorous adapter that will use the metadata in the .DBF file to create a more useful VisAD object, but have no timeline for that at the moment.
