Hi,

I have been using VisAD on Linux (with a recent Debian distribution)
quite successfully. Your memory problem may be due to the following
(from http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux/jdk1.2-status/known-bugs.html)

Garbage collector doesn't work
This is a bug with the native threads vm in 1.2pre2. A
work-around is to use green threads ('export THREADS_FLAG=green'), or
pass -green on
       the command line.

Java2 is still a bit flaky on Linux (frequent seg faults and displays
locking) so my application is getting deployed on (cringe) NT.

Doug
