You'd have to construct your river system or circle as VisAD
Sets with domain dimension = 2 and manifold dimension = 1.
There are constructors for Gridded2DSet that do this.  For a
set of line segments, you'll need to construct a UnionSet of
a bunch of Gridded2DSets, each with manifold dimension =1.
