[thredds] CrawlableDataset for other filesystems

Hi all,
Has anyone done work on integrating other types of filesystems for THREDDS? I noticed that CrawlableDataset interface, but it doesn't seem to have any way to open the files for reading Does this mean it's currently it's restricted to OPeNDAP and local filesystems?
