Subject: New NOAA Weather Wire Service During 2012

A new NOAA Weather Wire Service (NWWS) will be commissioned
during 2012. The new NWWS will operate concurrently with
the current NNWS system for a period of time before the old
NWWS system is decommissioned (turned off) in March 2012 at
the earliest. For the latest news and information about
this change, please consult the Weather Wire website at:

  http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwws/newnwws.html

This website will be updated as needed to keep you
informed. Also, see page 6 of the summer Aware report,
available at

  http://www.weather.gov/om/Aware/pdfs/11summer-aware.pdf

With the new system, C-band satellite users can continue to
re-use the outdoor antennas they already have in place
(which will not require re-pointing), but will need a new
satellite receiver, new Low Noise Block Converter (LNB),
and new (or modified) weather data display software.
Internet (Open Interface) users will need the new (or
modified) display software.

Operational requirements for system reliability and data
timeliness for the new NWWS remain the same as the current
NWWS. Costs will be at or below current costs. We will
have more specific information about the satellite
receiver, LNB, and software you will need after we have
completed our testing on this equipment later this summer.

The old NWWS system (operated under contract with Computer
Sciences Corporation (CSC) for the past 12 years) will
continue to operate into 2012, and will not be
decommissioned (turned off) until March 2012 at the
earliest.
