TRANSMITTED ON JANUARY 7 2005 DESCRIBING THE REPLACEMENT FOR THESE OBSOLETE PRODUCTS.

ATTENTION USERS OF THE MODEL OUTPUT STATISTICS /MOS/ GUIDANCE:

ON TUESDAY AUGUST 15 2006...NWS WILL STOP PRODUCING THE SHORT-
RANGE GLOBAL FORECAST SYSTEM /GFS/-BASED MOS BINARY UNIVERSAL FORM. THIS FORM REPRESENTS METEOROLOGICAL DATA /BUFR/ PRODUCTS ISSUED WITH THE COMMUNICATION IDENTIFIERS LISTED IN TABLE 1. THESE PRODUCTS WERE REPLACED WITH NEW SHORT-RANGE GFS-BASED MOS BUFR PRODUCTS IN FEBRUARY 2005. THESE NEW BUFR PRODUCTS CONTAIN GUIDANCE FOR ADDITIONAL WEATHER ELEMENTS AND MORE STATIONS THAN THE ORIGINAL BUFR PRODUCTS. THE COMMUNICATION IDENTIFIERS FOR THESE PRODUCTS ARE LISTED IN TABLE 2.

NWS CONTINUED TO PRODUCE THE OBSOLETE BUFR PRODUCTS TO ALLOW USERS AT LEAST NINE MONTHS TO TRANSITION FROM THE OLD PRODUCTS AND TO ALLOW AWIPS SOFTWARE TO BE UPGRADED TO USE THE NEW PRODUCTS. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS HAVE BEEN MET. THE OBSOLETE BUFR PRODUCTS ARE NOW BEING REMOVED.
