SUBJECT: Radar Product Compression and Test Ingest Periods Delayed

This is a follow up to FOS/NOAAPORT Notice No. 1643 dated
      April 7, 2000.

The NWS planned July 2000 initiation of compression of the radar
products broadcast over NOAAPORT has been delayed a minimum of two
months. The initiation of radar product compression over NOAAPORT is
dependent on an NWS AWIPS software release (version 4.3.3) to be
installed at all NWS sites. Another follow up status notice on this
activity will be issued in September. The technical information on
the planned compression and the access to test data sets that was
included in the April 2000 notice is repeated below.

The compression algorithm to be used is based on the zlib compression
libraries. These libraries and descriptions are available at the
      following web address: http://www.cdrom.com/pub/infozip/zlib

A document describing the Radar Product Compression Approach is now
accessible under the What's New heading on the NOAAPORT home page,
      address: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/noaaport/html/noaaport.shtml
The same What's New entry provides the web access to the address at
which 6 sample radar products are available, both in compressed and
decompressed formats, for users to download via FTP and test their
NOAAPORT receive systems processing. Also available as a separate
entry under the What's New heading is a "Dissemination of WSR-88D
      Products Concept Paper" dated
      March 27, 2000.
