NATIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION MESSAGE 95-10
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS
200 PM EDT TUE FEB 21 1995

TO: USERS OF NWS OBSERVATIONS FROM DENVER'S STAPLETON
            INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

FROM: FRED ZBAR
            ACTING CHIEF, SERVICES DEVELOPMENT BRANCH

SUBJECT: CHANGE IN SURFACE OBSERVATION PROGRAM IN DENVER,
            COLORADO

(THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED BY DIRK STAUBS, NWS DATA
REVIEW GROUP):

NOTE TO AFOS AND NWWS USERS: THE FOLLOWING CHANGE HAS NO IMPACT
TO NWWS USERS.

Effective at 0701 hours UTC on February 28, 1995, the manual surface
observation program at Denver's Stapleton International Airport will
cease operations. The manual surface observations at Stapleton will
be replaced by Automated Surface Observation System (ASOS)
observations at the newly opened Denver International Airport.
Beginning at that time, the identifier for the Denver International
Airport will permanently change from DVX to DEN and all operations at
the old Stapleton International Airport location will cease.

For AFOS users there will be NO change necessary in the PIL header to
accommodate this, as long as DENSAODEN is stored in your database.
The PIL for the ASOS observation from the new Denver airport will
change from DENSAODVX to DENSAODEN (which is the existing PIL for the
current SAO from Denver's Stapleton International Airport). The only
changes for AFOS are that the Denver SAO will be an FAA ASOS
observation from the new airport location at 39.9 deg N, 104.7 deg W
(elevation 5431 feet or 1655.8 meters) and that it will be sourced
from the FAA's Weather Message Switching Center. In addition, the
DENSAODVX PIL will no longer exist and can be deleted after
0701 hours UTC on February 28th.

For Family of Services users and other direct NWS Telecommunication
Gateway (NWSTG) users, the ASOS observation for the new Denver
International Airport will be included in the FAA-sourced SAO
collective SAUS5 KNKA under the DEN identifier rather than in the
NWS-sourced SAO collective SAUS80 KWBC. ASOS observations that were
previously available under the identifier DVX in the SAUS5 KNKA
collective will be found under the DEN identifier in that same
collective.

Also on February 28th, the manual synoptic observation for Denver,
previously under AFOS PIL DENSSMDEN, will be generated from the ASOS
SAO by a computer at the NWSTG and included in the automated synoptic
collective available in AFOS PIL NMCSSM71 (WMO header SMUS71 KWBC)
under the WMO block and station identifier of 72565.

For AFOS users, an AFOS Change Notice will be sent out under the AFOS
PIL cccADADRG later this week.
