NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS
245 PM EDT TUE AUG 2 1994

TO: ALL NWS OFFICES, DOMESTIC DATA SERVICE SUBSCRIBERS,
FAA USERS AND THE FAA WEATHER MESSAGE SWITCHING
            CENTER

FROM: JOE BOCCHIERI
            ACTING CHIEF, SERVICES DEVELOPMENT BRANCH

SUBJECT: REMOVAL OF LFM MOS GUIDANCE

(THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED BY J. PAUL DALLAVALLE OF
THE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY.)

On or about August 31, 1994, transmission of the FOUS12 KWBC
bulletin will be terminated. This message is also distributed as
the FPCxxx product on AFOS for 310 stations in the contiguous
United States. The xxx identifies the station call letters. The
FOUS12 (FPC) bulletin contains LFM-based MOS daytime maximum
(max) and nighttime minimum (min) temperature and probability
of precipitation (PoP) guidance. Both the max/min temperature
and PoP guidance are available for projections ending 24 to 60
hours after 0000 and 1200 UTC. Users of the FOUS12 (FPC)
bulletin are encouraged to use the NGM-based MOS forecast product
FOUS14 KWBC (known as the FWCxxx on AFOS) or new statistical
guidance based on NMC's Aviation (AVN) run of the Global Spectral
Model, which will also be implemented August 31st. The latter
AVN-based MOS guidance provides max/min temperature and PoP
guidance for approximately 225 stations in the contiguous United
States. This guidance will be distributed on AFOS under the new
category FAN and disseminated to external users as the FEXCyy,
FEXEyy, FEXSyy, and FEXWyy products where yy is a two digit
number identifying each message. Technical Procedures Bulletin
(TPB) No. 408 entitled "NGM-Based MOS Guidance - The FOUS14/FWC
Message" describes the contents of the NGM MOS message. A
forthcoming TPB entitled "The AVN-Based Statistical Guidance
Message" will describe the AVN-based statistical guidance.

If you have any concerns related to the termination of the LFM
MOS guidance, please contact Chris Alex at 301-713-0462. For
further information on the NGM-based or AVN-based statistical
guidance, please contact Paul Dallavalle or John Jensenius at
301-763-8151.
