Due to the current gap in continued funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the NSF Unidata Program Center has temporarily paused most operations. See NSF Unidata Pause in Most Operations for details.

WERNLY, CHIEF, WARNING AND FORECAST BRANCH ...Universal Generic Coding (UGC) in state areal outlines for severe weather watches approved to start September 30, 1992... Effective September 30, 1992, UGCs will appear in the areal outlines for severe thunderstorm and tornado watches (NOAA Weather Wire Service product identifier cccSLSxx and the Family of Service product identifier WWUS32 Kccc). THE FOLLOWING IS A SUMMARY OF THIS SERVICE ADDITION: UGC coding in the SLS will allow some users to automate distribution of watch information to affected areas. For users wishing to continue receiving complete SLSs for certain states, NO actions are required. UGCs however, will allow users the option of receiving watch information from the SLS for only selected counties/parishes or independent cities. The "C" form of the UGC shall be used in the SLS for counties (or parishes), and independent cities. Since the SLS consists of sections applying to separate geographical areas of a state, the beginning of each section shall have a separate UGC line. A double dollar sign ($$) shall be used as an end-of-text code on a separate line immediately after each section. ..................EXAMPLE ONLY......DO NOT USE................. This message describes the changes in the state forecast product, which will also become effective on Sept. 30th at 0000 UTC. *************************************************************************** WSHPNSWSH ADMN81 KWBC DDHHMM PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT ...PART 1 OF 2... NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS WASHINGTON DC 230 PM EDT TUE SEP 1 1992 TO: NWS EMPLOYEES, FAMILY OF SERVICES SUBSCRIBERS, NOAA WEATHER WIRE SERVICE SUBSCRIBERS, OTHER NWS PRODUCT USERS FROM: DONALD R. WERNLY, CHIEF, WARNING AND FORECAST BRANCH ...PART 1 OF A 2-PART MESSAGE... ...PART 2 WILL FOLLOW IMMEDIATELY AFTER PART 1... Effective September 30, 1992, with the early morning issuance, each Weather Service Forecast Office (WSFO) in the continental U.S. will issue a new, 1- to 5-day State Forecast in discrete periods. This new product will be issued twice daily within a flexible window period of about 4 to 6 a.m./p.m. local time. It can be accessed through the same NOAA Weather Wire Service (NWWS) header "cccSFPxx" and Family of Services (FOS) header "FPUS1 Kccc" as the old State Forecast Product. The new SFP combines the old State Forecast (1- and 2-day) and old Extended Forecast (3- to 5-day) into one product. At the effective date the old Extended Forecast, NWWS header "cccEFPxx" and FOS header "FEUS1 Kccc," shall be eliminated as a separate product. Aside from the use of discrete time periods for the 5-day forecast, the following product guidelines and formats for the new SFP are basically the same as the old SFP. o Most WSFOs will issue the SFP for an entire state. Some WSFOs will issue the SFP for part of one or more states. o For those cases where only one geographic forecast segment is used, the SFP will follow "format a" below. For those cases where two or more geographic forecast segments are used, the SFP will follow "format b" below. o The Universal Generic Code (UGC) shall use the "Z" form of the code to indicate that public zones describe the affected area. Note that the placement of the UGC is different in the two formats. Also note that when the SFP covers an entire state, the UGC takes the form SSZALL-DDHHMM-, where all public forecast zones in the state are included. When the SFP covers only part of a state or uses two or more geographic forecast segments, the UGC uses the appropriate public zones to differentiate areas. o Double dollar signs ($$) are used to separate geographic forecast segments in format b. o The first period of any geographic forecast segment shall always be separate. Other periods may be combined - but only within each forecast section. In other words, periods in the extended forecast section shall not be combined with periods in the 1- and 2-day forecast section. See part 2 of this message for examples.
