What looks attractive is FASTER compression: <http://www.hdfgroup.org/doc_resource/SZIP/ > 3 to 4 times faster compress time than gzip (so shorter write times), albeit on a Pentium II 300 Mhz (any more modern comparisons out there?). About same for decompression. I haven't used it myself yet, since it's not supported yet in netcdf4.....
